CUSTOM PROCESS
Scofield Custom Services
Our passion at Scofield Lighting is to create fixtures of quality and beauty. Although we post examples of our work on our Web Site, customization of existing patterns and the creation of fixtures from your designs are what drives our company.
Our designers and craftspeople at Scofield can create a fixture based upon conceptual designs (napkin drawings acceptable) and detailed drawings. There are a range of services that we provide that can bring a lighting vision to life. The process and cost relate to the degree of specificity required.
Interior Design Services are an Essential Element of Custom Fixture Design
Scofield’s primary mission is to serve the Trade (architects, designers and builders). We encourage people who contact us about what they see on our website to retain the services of a designer to be sure that the envisioned fixture compliments the overall aesthetic goals of the project.
Any qualified member of the Trade can contact us for access to options and services not available to the public. Because we are not interior designers, we encourage people who want custom fixtures to use the professional services of people who are qualified to be of assistance to ensure that the ultimate design complements the aesthetics and other elements of the project.
FIXTURE DESIGN SERVICES
Modification of a fixture from our Collection:
Because we make our fixtures, it is possible to incorporate the Trade touches with respect to non-structural modifications—changing finials, lamping, glass, changing from an Edison base to a one or more candle bases, etc. These modifications can be specified by the Trade. We can provide sample elements if necessary and we can mock up fixtures to provide more detail to the conceived changes. We can also work with you to help you visualize your fixture in a modified form. Research, design, drawings (by hand or CAD), etc. are billable at $125/hr. If the modification is non-structural and simple, the upcharge can be minimal.
Structural modifications from our Collection:
Changing the size, adding/deleting features may or may not require detailed drawings—this depends on the client and the complexity of the alteration. Changes in structure of an existing pattern might require new or modified jigs and patterns.
A preliminary discussion with our Sales Staff will determine the extent to which design services are necessary. In some cases, design work is necessary in order to provide a quote. Scofield may need to charge a fee for this design service, depending on the degree of detail to be specified or on the design work necessary to provide the client and our craftsmen with enough information to ensure that the client’s expectations are adequately documented for fabrication and finishing.
Elements of cost related to structural modification are concentrated on necessary metal spinnings, jigs, pattern fabrication and overall mechanical design and execution. In the case where multiple fixtures are needed, the one time, non-recurring costs will be identified so that the total cost of the project can be related to initial design / engineering versus the actual unit cost to produce the designed fixture.
Custom Fixture- From Concept to Beauty
This is a topic of passion for our craftspeople. We can your designs and concepts in any form and turn that into an exceptional fixture. It generally costs $1K - $5K to take a fixture from concept to buildable design to a working prototype. The cost relates to the detail specified and the extent to which one-time, non-recurring costs are necessary.
There are three basic stages for design and build:
1). Concept: We work quite well with architects, designers, builders and your clients in order to translate concepts into beautiful fixtures. The discussion typically takes shape about the space and the look and feel of the fixtures to be provided.
Illumination, design, materials, finish, etc.—all important topics to go through in order to come up with an initial rendering. We can work with basic sketches and dimensioned drawings. This is the starting point.
Depending on how much detail is necessary and how much documentation is required, the designer may either provide this or we can provide these services at our hourly rate (presently at $125/hr).
2). Structural Design- Depending on the complexity, one or multiple mock-ups might be necessary in order to be certain that the concept can be executed as drawn within the liberties granted to the builder and within parameters specified by the client. Documentation at this point ranges from the minimum of what we need to build to whatever level of detail your client desires to specify. We may be able to quote the fixture based upon simple line drawings.
If you want our design department to produce the basic line drawing, we will do so for a cost of $300/fixture which includes one re-draw unless a material change in concept is necessary. If CAD drawings are necessary and not provided, we will do this at $125/hour. Typically, our Trade clients provide the basic design as part of the professional services they provide their clients.
First Article Fabrication
We encourage construction of a sample fixture when fabricating custom fixtures in multiples. In most cases, the build of the sample fixture simply validates the design and becomes part of the final order. It is also a good way to ensure that the client is receiving what they envision. Once the designed fixture comes to life, your client is able to visualize the entire production run and if changes or new thoughts come to mind, this is an appropriate time to make any changes.
A cost estimate for the fabrication of the number of fixtures requested should be available once the design drawings are approved.
3) Final Approval- Once final approval is granted, then the order is executed as specified. We require final approval of designs before we can finalize our quote and estimated delivery.
