What is the proper handling of Scofield fixtures?

Fixtures must be installed by a licensed electrician. When you receive delivery of one of our fixtures, you’ll also receive a pair of protective gloves that should be used to handle the fixture during installation. This will prevent natural oils from marring the surface and will keep glass and finish clean.

How do I insert my Glass and Mirrors?

Glass and mirrors in lanterns are generally packaged separately. Once the fixture has been properly wired and mounted, the glass and mirrors can be easily installed from the top then slip down the bottom channels to fit securely in place.

Lanterns specified with Authentic Restoration Glass (Trademark) may take a little more time to slide into place because of the naturally inconsistent thickness that characterizes this unique glass. Be patient. If it doesn’t fit in one side, try another. Turn it upside down and work with it.

How do I hang my Chandeliers?

It is recommended that a license electrician safely install all fixtures. Chandeliers are hard wired to the ceiling. Detailed installation instructions are included with your fixtures. It is essential that the fixture is installed without turning the fixture. Twisting the chandelier will damage the internal wiring creating a hazardous situation. This is not covered under our warranty.

What defines where a fixture can go, indoors or outdoors, wet or damp?

Every fixture we make is appropriate for indoors. Even though some are built for exterior locations, we’re increasingly discovering they’re enjoyed indoors. A wet location is outdoors, exposed to all the elements. Examples of outdoor fixtures include post lanterns, exterior sconces. A damp location is not directly exposed to the skies. It can be used with overhead protection. For example, copper fixtures with punchwork cannot be exposed to the skies because they’re not waterproof.

If I need UL certification, does Scofield provide it?

We build to Underwriter Laboratories (UL) 1598 standards for luminaries for most fixtures and are certified to be in compliance with this standard as listed with Intertek, a nationally recognized independent testing laboratory. Although a fixture may be built to this safety standard, it is not considered certified unless it has been tested, listed and has the requisite ETL labels on it affirming compliance to UL1598. We do not apply that mark to our listed fixtures unless requested at time of order. For an additional fee of $25.00 we’ll apply the label for you. The product pages in our Collection indicates whether the specific fixtures has been listed with ETL to be compliant with UL 1598.

Custom fixtures can be individually tested and certified by ETL upon request. Our Custom Department will provide a quote once the fixture is specified. Costs range from $800 - $2,000 for this designation depending on the type of testing and review necessary for the ETL engineers. The designer or architect is responsible for asking if labels are required for their jobs.

What Custom Fixture Design and Build Services are provided by Scofield?

Our designers and craftspeople at Scofield can create a fixture based upon your designs (napkin drawings acceptable). There are a range of services that we provide that can bring a lighting vision to life.

Interior Design: Scofield’s primary mission is to serve lighting design and fabrication needs of the Trade (architects, designers and builders). We encourage people who contact us about what they see on our website to contact their Designers for suggestions, ideas and detail specifications. Any qualified member of the Trade can contact us for access to pricing and custom services not available to the public. If you are a member of the Trade but require design services, we can refer you to our New York showroom or to Designers that have worked with us in the past.

Fixture Design Services: Modification of a fixture from our Collection: Non-structural and structural modifications to our Permanent Collection fixtures—from changing finials and lamping to altering the dimensions and proportions, is available to the Trade by calling or Emailing our Custom Department (Custom@ScofieldLighting.Com) with your general concept. Please include the project/client name for future reference. Elements of cost related to structural modification are concentrated on necessary metal spinnings, jigs, pattern fabrication and overall mechanical design and execution. Structural modifications from our Collection can include changing the size, adding/deleting features may or may not require detailed drawings—this depends on the client and the complexity of the alteration. A preliminary discussion with our Sales Staff will determine the extent to which design services are necessary. In some cases, design work is necessary in order to provide a quote. Scofield may need to charge a fee for this design service, depending on the degree of detail to be specified or on the design work necessary to provide the client and our craftsmen with enough information to ensure that the client’s expectations are adequately documented for fabrication and finishing. In the case where multiple fixtures are needed, the one time, non-recurring costs will be identified so that the total cost of the project can be related to initial design / engineering versus the actual unit cost to produce the designed fixture.

New Fixture Design and Construction:We build from approved, dimensioned plans. We can help you to define the fixture in enough detail to quote a final price. If you do not have drawings and would like our Design Department to provide these services, contact us to arrange this servce. Research and design discussions, to the extent that we go beyond basic questions, are available at our hourly rate (ask us), as are requests for drawings, either by hand or via CAD.

How do Scofield Hand Applied Finishes adapt to their Installed Environments?

Our finishes are hand applied and tend to advance the hands of time. Certain finishes and surfaces will naturally oxidize over time. We expedite the process in order to achieve our rich surface finishes but various factors, including time, touch, climate, and exposure to elements will affect color, sheen and texture of the metal over time. This "living finish" is referred to as the patina. Nature will continue to age oxidized and bronzed copper patinas. Fixtures may continue to age as they are exposed to the natural elements and dynamics of their installed environment.
